What is Arbitrum (ARB)?
Rank #101
Arbitrum is a technology that makes the Ethereum blockchain faster and much cheaper to use, while keeping it safe. Think of Ethereum as a busy highway that often gets jammed and expensive to drive on; Arbitrum is like a fast express lane built right beside it. ARB is the token used to help govern (make decisions about) the Arbitrum project.
What is Arbitrum in simple terms?
To understand Arbitrum, it helps to first picture a blockchain (a shared digital notebook that everyone can read, but no one can secretly erase or fake). Ethereum is one of the most popular blockchains, and people use it to send money, trade, and run small programs called smart contracts (computer code that runs automatically when its rules are met, like a vending machine that gives you a snack the moment you pay).
The problem is that Ethereum became so popular it got crowded. When too many people use it at once, things slow down and fees go up. Arbitrum is a Layer 2 (a helper network built on top of a main blockchain to take some of the work off it). It handles transactions away from the crowded main road, then sends a tidy summary back to Ethereum. The result: the same security as Ethereum, but with lower fees and faster speeds.
How does Arbitrum work?
Imagine a teacher who has to grade 1,000 math tests one by one. That is slow. Now imagine a helper who collects all 1,000 tests, grades them off to the side, and hands the teacher one neat report saying "here are the final scores." The teacher only needs to check the report, not redo every test. Arbitrum works a bit like that helper.
Here is the basic idea, step by step:
- You make a transaction (like a trade or a payment) on Arbitrum instead of directly on Ethereum.
- Arbitrum bundles many transactions together and processes them off the main chain. This bundling is why it is called a rollup (it "rolls up" lots of activity into one package).
- A compressed summary of all that activity is posted back to Ethereum, which stores it permanently.
- Because Ethereum keeps the final record, Arbitrum inherits Ethereum's strong security.
Arbitrum uses a design called an optimistic rollup. "Optimistic" means the system assumes all the bundled transactions are honest by default, which keeps things fast. But if someone tries to cheat, anyone watching can submit a fraud proof (evidence that a transaction was fake), and the cheater is rejected. It is like trusting people to be honest, but with a referee ready to throw a flag if someone breaks the rules.
What is Arbitrum used for?
Arbitrum is mainly used to do everything you can do on Ethereum, but for a fraction of the cost. People and apps move to Arbitrum to save money and time. Common uses include:
- DeFi (short for "decentralized finance" — financial apps with no bank in the middle), such as lending, borrowing, and trading tokens.
- Trading on DEXs (decentralized exchanges, which let you swap one crypto for another directly, without a company holding your coins).
- NFTs (unique digital items, like collectible art or game items, that live on a blockchain).
- Games and other apps that need many small, cheap transactions to feel smooth.
The ARB token itself has a specific job: it is a governance token. Holding ARB lets you vote on proposals about how the Arbitrum network is run — things like how shared funds are spent or which upgrades to make. It works a little like being a shareholder who gets to vote at a company meeting, except the votes happen openly on the blockchain.
Who created Arbitrum and when?
Arbitrum was built by a company called Offchain Labs, founded in 2018 by Ed Felten, Steven Goldfeder, and Harry Kalodner. Ed Felten is a computer scientist and former professor at Princeton University who also served as a technology adviser in the U.S. government, so the team brought serious academic and technical experience.
The main Arbitrum network, called Arbitrum One, launched to the public in 2021. The ARB token came later, in March 2023, when it was distributed to many early users in a large airdrop (a free giveaway of tokens to people who had already used the network). Around the same time, control of the project began moving to the Arbitrum DAO — a DAO being a "decentralized autonomous organization," basically a community that makes decisions together through token voting instead of a single boss.
What makes Arbitrum different?
Arbitrum is not the only Layer 2, but a few things help it stand out:
- It runs Ethereum software almost as-is. Apps and developers can move over with little extra work, because Arbitrum is highly compatible with the EVM (the Ethereum Virtual Machine — the "engine" that runs Ethereum's smart contracts).
- It is one of the most-used Layer 2 networks, hosting a large number of popular apps and a big share of Layer 2 activity. A busy network tends to attract even more apps and users.
- It offers more than one chain. Besides Arbitrum One, there is Arbitrum Nova (tuned for very cheap, high-volume uses like games and social apps), plus a toolkit called Arbitrum Orbit that lets others build their own custom chains connected to Arbitrum.
In short, Arbitrum's edge is a blend of strong security inherited from Ethereum, low costs, and a large, active community of apps and users.
How do you buy and store Arbitrum (ARB)?
You can buy ARB in two main ways. The first is on a centralized exchange (a company-run platform where you trade crypto, similar to an online stock app). The second is on a decentralized exchange running on the Arbitrum network itself.
To store ARB, you use a crypto wallet (an app or device that holds the secret keys that prove the coins are yours). There are two broad choices:
- Software wallets: apps on your phone or browser. They are convenient for everyday use.
- Hardware wallets: small physical devices that keep your keys offline, which is generally safer for larger amounts.
One golden rule: never share your secret recovery phrase (the list of words that can restore your wallet). Anyone who has it can take your crypto. Treat it like the only key to a safe.
Is Arbitrum safe? Risks to know
Arbitrum's core design is well-regarded, and because it posts its records to Ethereum, it borrows Ethereum's battle-tested security. But "safe technology" does not mean "no risk." Things worth understanding:
- Smart contract risk: Arbitrum and the apps on it are made of code, and code can have bugs that attackers might exploit.
- Bridge risk: moving funds between Ethereum and Arbitrum uses a bridge (a tool that connects two networks). Bridges have historically been targets for hackers, so caution helps.
- Price swings: the value of ARB can rise and fall a lot, sometimes quickly.
- Governance and key control: like many newer projects, decisions and certain controls are still maturing as the DAO grows.
Arbitrum currently sits around rank #100 by market value among all cryptocurrencies, which shows it is an established project but still part of a fast-changing space. As always, do your own research before getting involved, and never put in more than you can afford to lose. Nothing here is financial advice.
Frequently asked questions
Is Arbitrum the same as Ethereum?
No, but they are closely linked. Ethereum is the main blockchain, and Arbitrum is a Layer 2 built on top of it to make transactions faster and cheaper. Arbitrum sends its records back to Ethereum for safekeeping, so it relies on Ethereum's security.
What is the ARB token for?
ARB is a governance token. Holding it lets you vote on proposals about how the Arbitrum network is run, such as how shared funds are used and which upgrades happen. It is not the coin you pay network fees with — those fees are paid in ETH.
Why are fees on Arbitrum cheaper than on Ethereum?
Arbitrum bundles many transactions together off the main chain and posts only a compact summary to Ethereum. Because the cost of using Ethereum is shared across that whole bundle, each individual transaction ends up much cheaper.
How can I start using Arbitrum?
You set up a crypto wallet, get some ARB or ETH, and either bridge funds from Ethereum or buy directly on an exchange. From there you can connect your wallet to apps running on the Arbitrum network. Start small while you learn, and protect your recovery phrase.
