About Aave
Aave is a decentralized lending platform that enables users to lend cryptocurrencies to earn interest or borrow assets by providing collateral, all without intermediaries like banks. Operating as a set of smart contracts on the Ethereum blockchain and other networks, the system functions as an automated, rule-based financial infrastructure. The platform's native token, AAVE, facilitates governance by allowing holders to vote on protocol changes and participate in security measures. The name "Aave" translates to "ghost" in Finnish, reflecting the system's design as an invisible, background helper. Fundamentally, Aave utilizes liquidity pools, which act as shared buckets of specific crypto assets. Depositors place funds into these pools to generate yield, receiving special tokens known as aTokens in return. Borrowers can access funds against their locked collateral, with all transactions executed automatically by code. This model creates a global, permissionless shared piggy bank where access is determined solely by algorithmic rules rather than human managers. The project has been active since 2020, establishing itself as a prominent example of decentralized finance technology.
